The Packers hired Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager

The Packers tabbed director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday. The Packers had interest in Seahawks general manager John Schneider, a Green Bay native, but the team's request to interview Schneider was denied. NFL Network reports he was also being considered for similar jobs in Houston and was there for an interview when the Packers made their offer.

Gutekunst interned in the Packers' scouting department in the summer of 1997.

Gutekunst has been with the Packers since 1999 when he joined the team as a scout. In addition to stripping Thompson of his duties, the club is searching for new coordinators to replace Dom Capers and Edgar Bennett and several new assistants, including quarterbacks, defensive line and assistant linebackers.

"My goal is to find the right person and general manager who will be able to get us back to where we all think we should be and that's winning Super Bowls", team president Mark Murphy, who led the search, said last week. The offense struggled after two-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers missed nine games because of a collarbone injury. Hiring an in-house personnel guy who aligns with his philosophy and a similar approach that Thompson took is a good thing for a coach who was given a quiet one-year extension in the middle of the last season.
