Earlier today, the company announced that it is commencing a worldwide recall of lithium ion batteries for its notebooks and mobile workstations due to flaws that could cause them to overheat and catch fire.
There have been eight reports of the batteries overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage. The recalled batteries were sold at Best Buy, Amazon.com, HP.com and other stores and websites nationwide between December 2015 and December 2017.

When sold separately, the batteries cost between $50-$90. HP has offered to provide replacements and replacement services free of charge to impacted customers.
The voluntary safety recall was initiated this month, with HP offering replacements for affected units.

If users that do have an affected battery however, HP has advised against removing it manually. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode). Put another way, HP said that notebooks will simply refuse to operate without the charger attached, so users will need to plug in the laptop to use it.
HP has set up a recall site and released a BIOS update. "For this reason, it is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected".
