Net Neutrality: FCC Chairman Pai Pulls Out Of CES 2018

Big US telcos and cable companies may yet rue the day that their man at the FCC chose to go gangbusters over net neutrality repeal.

Ajit Pai, a Republican appointed by, opposed the rules when they were enacted in 2014, when the FCC was controlled by Democrats. Ohlhausen is still scheduled to attend the event.

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai canceled a scheduled appearance at CES 2018 on Wednesday evening, January 3, less than a week before the interview. "We look forward to our next opportunity to host a technology policy discussion with him before a public audience".

Nearly no information has been given regarding Pai's cancellation, other than an email from the CTA noting that "we look forward to our next opportunity to host a technology policy discussion with him before a public audience", and the FCC declined to offer any additional explanation. However, CTA head Gary Shapiro earlier told Digital Trends that he did not know why Pai had canceled, but raised the fact that he had recently been "subject to vicious and direct attacks and threats". In April 2017, he unveiled plans to reverse net neutrality rules that were in place by the Obama administration in 2015. This move has made him unpopular with most of the country except for executives at internet service providers, to whom he's got close personal ties.

It's not the first time Pai's security has been threatened. During Pai's remarks, the FCC chambers were abruptly evacuated to investigate a security threat.

The FCC released the full text of its Restoring Internet Freedom order on Thursday.

Since the commission voted to repeal so-called net neutrality rules, resistance has solidified, with the FCC expected to find itself involved in a number of legal battles in 2018.

FTC Commissioner Terrell McSweeny, who has voiced opposition to repealing net neutrality, tweeted Thursday that it was "unacceptable" to threaten a public servant due to their views.
