Apple buys Buddybuild to bolster Xcode developer tools

05 January 2018, 01:59 | Clyde Nash

Developers can integrate with popular tools such as GitHub, Slack, JIRA, HipChat and Trello.

The startup has joined the Xcode engineering group at Apple to build developer tools for the iOS community.

The Canadian firm also made clear that its entire roster of talents will remain in Canada and that its core service "to build, test, and ship iOS apps to testers" will remain available to existing users.

Both companies did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Apple App Store now offers users close to 2,000 ARKit-enabled apps across various categories like games, shopping, education, social media, and more.

TechCrunch reported that the acquisition will apparently make the process more convenient for developers to create newer apps for Apple's mobile and tablet platforms.

In fact, Apple announced this week that consumers made a whopping $300 million in purchases on the App Store on New Year's Day 2018 alone. In 2017, iOS developers earned $26.5 billion, a 30 percent increase over the prior year, Apple said.

So, Disney has always been making money off of Star Wars but it's still an impressive benchmark for the movies. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came in second at the box office this weekend with $50.5 earned.

The acquisition means, Buddybuild will bring additional tools for testing, debugging and employing mobile apps through a proprietary channel.

More to the point, it should make developing and iterating apps for iOS that much easier than before.

Buddybuild isn't Apple's first app development acquisition. "Of the $17 billion generated in Q3 from apps globally (excluding China), Apple accounted for around $11 billion of it, according to App Annie", the report added.

Notably, shares of Apple have gained 48.5% in the past one year slightly outperforming the industry's 45.5% rally. It marked the end to a booming gift-giving season, with $890 million spent on apps between Christmas and New Year's Day, Apple said on Thursday.

With the arrival of the iPhone X and all the new features that come with it, including the TrueDepth camera and the augmented reality technology that Apple is investing in, it only makes sense that it would want to make the jobs of developers as easy as possible. It started to require its users to use Xcode when utilizing the service.

Buddybuild was established in 2015 by former Amazon employees Dennis Pilarinos and Christopher Stott. Since its establishment, the startup has managed to raise around $8.8 million. Some of the other clients include Mozilla, Hootsuite, Reddit, SoundCloud, FourSquare and The New York Times.

Following the accusation, Buddybuild will stop accepting new customers from 1 March while all the existing customers will continue to enjoy the services uninterrupted.
