IMA calls off strike after NMC Bill sent to select committee

The Indian Medical Association has called for a 12-hour shutdown of all private hospitals in the country on Tuesday to protest the National Medical Commission Bill 2017

Opposing the National Medical Commission Bill, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 12-hour strike across the country on Tuesday.

Ahead of the strike, health ministry issued advisory to medical institutions to ensure that all steps were taken to provide emergency services to the masses.

IMA President said the bill will create totally government nominated body called NMC which will replace democratically elected Medical Council Of India. The IMA wants amendments in the bill, which will be tabled in Lok Sabha on Parliament.

3 lakh doctors went on strike today across the nation. It also proposes to allow practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda, practice allopathy after completing a "bridge course".

The new National Medical Council will create four autonomous boards - UGME (Undergraduate Medical Education Board), PGME (Postgraduate Medical Education Board), MAR (Medical Assessment and Rating) Board and EMR (Ethics and Medical Registration) Board. We have been discussing the National Medical Commission Bill with the government since a year. The IMA has called for a one-day strike against the bill today.

"The National Medical Commission in its present form is not acceptable to us".

The bill also allows private colleges to decide fee for 60 per cent of the seats; it is 15 per cent now.

Meanwhile, Indian Medical Association (IMA) president Dr K K Agarwal has, on Tuesday, appealed to the Prime Minister to revise the draft bill in the larger interest of the medical profession.

However, the Indian Medical Association has labelled NMC bill as anti-poor and anti-people.

Dr Veeranna said the appointment of members to the commission is not by election, but rather by nomination by the Union government.

The IMA statement said the Bill bestows such widespread power to the Board that it was liable to be misused.
