Report Texans will fire either Bill O'Brien or Rick Smith after season

"I have chosen to take an extended leave of absence to focus my attention and intention on my wife's complete recovery from her recent diagnosis of breast cancer", the statement reads.

Bill O'Brien may not be coaching the Texans much longer, and it has everything to do with his relationship with general manager Rick Smith.

ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that Tiffany Smith has been undergoing treatments in Arizona; Rick Smith has been traveling back and forth to care for her.

But middle ground between the coach and GM seem so far apart reports the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson, that one or the other likely will be gone before next season. However, the most important thing at the moment is the health of Smith's wife. He's had three 9-7 seasons and won two AFC South titles, but the Texans have collapsed to 4-11 this year after star rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his ACL.

Smith reportedly has a close relationship with Texans owner Bob McNair and his son, team vice chairman and chief operating officer Cal McNair.

O'Brien has one season remaining on a five-year deal he signed when he became the Texans' coach in 2014.

The Texans closed out their 2017 campaign with a 22-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Earlier this month, O'Brien said that he "will never quit as head football coach of the Houston Texans". O'Brien is now 31-33 in his four seasons in Houston.
