Raiders to make a run at Jon Gruden

"The Oakland Raiders are preparing to pursue ESPN analyst Jon Gruden with an offer so strong it could even include an ownership stake in the team, according to league sources", Schefter and Mortensen wrote. If it appears to be a done deal, there's a chance that any potential minority candidates would decline to sit for the job. The ESPN report said that Gruden will be "tempted to accept", the offer from the Raiders, but will not make any decisions before Oakland determines whether Jack Del Rio will return as head coach in 2018.

Now in the market for a new head coach, the Raiders figure to be focused on finding a boss who can maximize the deep pool of talent they've collected on that side of the ball over the past few years.

Gruden compiled an overall record of 95-81 in 11 seasons with the Raiders and Bucs, winning a title with Tampa Bay in 2002. Even though he signed a four-year extension last offseason, the Raiders have fallen below.500 in 2017. After a loss to New England in an AFC division playoff game, Gruden was traded to the Bucs for two first-round picks, two second-round picks and $8 million.

Gruden wasn't much more fortunate in his first season (1998) at the controls of Oakland, as he was handed a roster that had quarterbacks Donald Hollas, Wade Wilson and the perennially underachieving mistake waiting to happen Jeff George to choose from. "There is no news to report", Gruden said Saturday.

Former head coach of the Raiders and now football analyst Jon Gruden shown at a game between the Saints and Raiders November, 2012 in Oakland. After making the playoffs past year, many expected the team to take a big step forward. Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me. If Gruden didn't want the Raiders job, he could have simply said, "I've talked to plenty of suitors, but I'm staying at ESPN".

Though he doesn't have coaching experience, it's hard to overlook the personal connection he has with Gruden. But if Davis is genuinely intent on make a change at head coach, he would be better served to snatch up a current offensive-minded and progressive coach such as Patriots OC Josh McDaniels given QB Derek Carr's recent regression.

The reasons for the Buccaneers deciding to keep coach Dirk Koetter possibly are becoming clearer.
