Trump fires entire HIV/AIDS council, while 1.2M Americans are still infected

Trump Fires HIV/AIDS Council In Its Entirety By FedEx Letter, Report Claims

US President Donald Trump has fired the entire council that advises his administration about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the Washington Post reported on Saturday. Six members had resigned in June, protesting the Trump administration's lack of action regarding the disease.

Sources with knowledge of PACHA said many council members were fired even though additional time remained on their terms as advisers. Patrick Sullivan, an Emory epidemiologist appointed to a four-year term in May 2016, argued that continuity of personnel was an important aspect of the council, providing both stability and fresh ideas: "It is important to have a rolling, transitioning body that crosses administrations that really has a set of diverse outlooks on the epidemic".

It should be noted that, during the Obama administration, nearly all of George W. Bush's appointees were terminated prior to new appointees being named.

The PACHA was created in 1995 during the Clinton administration to provide recommendations about the government's response to the HIV epidemic. Schoettes was appointed to the advisory council during the Obama administration.

But while President Barack Obama had terminated all Bush appointees to the council, this situation is different, said Maldonado, who was appointed by Obama and was to serve into next year.

But Maldonado said the termination of PACHA members during the Trump administration is only partially consistent with the Obama years.

Thomas also echoed his sister's remarks that their family is "extremely close" and get together on holidays . Our dad is awesome and completely self-sacrificing".

One of the people fired, Gabriel Maldonado, CEO of Truevolution in Riverside, Calif., told The Blade that he had time remaining on his appointment to the board.

Scott Schoettes, a senior attorney for Lambda Legal who resigned from the council in June, considers the firings "dangerous". "I think where the discrepancy comes in is why a year later, number one?"

He also noted that numerous dismissed council members whose terms expired earlier this year were sworn back in to their positions months ago - even after Trump signed an executive order which kept PACHA going for another year. He also wants more than $1 billion in cuts from worldwide programs like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. ".I can only hope that my people - marginalized people - remember that we have been here before".

Several members slammed Trump's planned American Health Care Act (AHCA), saying it would leave numerous 1.1 million Americans with HIV-AIDS without access to proper treatment. Neither statement includes a explicit mention of LGBT people, who are considered to have face the brunt of the disease.

Trump's ignorance on the issue was evident last week as well.
