YouTube seals deal with top music label amid streaming moves

YouTube Expanding

Universal Music Group and social media giant Facebook have signed a global licensing arrangement that will make the publisher's music catalogs available for video and "social experiences", across Facebook, Instagram and Facebook's virtual reality company Oculus.

Tamara Hrivnak, head of music business development and partnerships, Facebook, said of the deal: "There is a magnetic relationship between music and community building".

The deals better position YouTube to launch its upcoming music streaming service.YouTube plans to launch a new music streaming subscription service, internally dubbed "Remix", in March 2018.

"Together, Facebook and UMG are creating a dynamic new model for collaboration between music companies and social platforms to advance the interests of recording artists and songwriters while enhancing the social experience of music for their fans", comments Michael Nash, Executive Vice President of Digital Strategy, Universal Music Group.

So, on the one hand this is what publishers and labels have been asking for in 2017 - an initial deal to license Facebook for the music contained within user-uploaded videos. One service that music industry fans may need to take a closer look at is if they find Lady Gaga's "The Cure", Kendrick Lamar's "Humble", or OneRepublic's "Apologize" on YouTube Red, the social media network's premium service. We are excited to bring that to life on Facebook, Instagram, Oculus and Messenger in partnership with UMG.

Kashmir: Two militants killed in gunfight
The trapped militants tried to escape while firing their guns but soldiers retaliated, leading to a prolonged clash. The locals according to reports staged massive pro-freedom protest protests in and around the encounter site.

Last year, the site made a concerted push into livestreaming with Facebook Live, letting users with a smartphone broadcast everything from press conferences to their dinner parties to the world at large.

For years, artists have complained that streaming services don't adequately pay them for their music.

With those tools in place and this new deal, Facebook is another step closer in its quest to be a destination for high-end video.

Earlier this month, Facebook released its own collections of songs and song effects.
