Islanders win bid to build arena at Belmont Park

The New York Islanders are poised to move forward with a new arena at Belmont Park, as the team's bid for the site is expected to chosen as the victor.

According to Jim Baumbach of Newsday, the bid includes an 18,000-seat, year-round arena that would host 150 events per year.

A 200-to-250-room hotel and 435,000-square feet of retail space are also in the Islanders' plans.

State officials confirmed the deal Wednesday ahead of a formal announcement. He says it will be "the home of economic development".

The state-run Empire State Development Corp. announced in July a request for proposals to develop vacant and underutilized parking lots at the site of the racetrack. Islanders owner Jonathan Ledecky didn't immediately return a text message seeking comment.

Worse yet, Barclays Center management, which originally signed a 25-year deal with the Islanders, stated at the beginning of 2017 they wanted their hockey-playing tenants out of their building and put on the table a January 1 deadline to renegotiate the terms of their deal where, if the two sides weren't able to come to an accord, Barclays Center would have been able to choose to keep the current deal or opt out.

The Islanders will stay in Brooklyn through the end of next season.

Lane Kiffin, FAU agree on deal through 2027
Gilbert is a first-team all-Mid-American Conference selection who has recorded more than 120 tackles each of the last two seasons. After skipping out on Tennessee after one season in Knoxville, Kiffin was sacked from his dream job, Southern California.

After three seasons playing in Brooklyn, the team is coming back home to Nassau County.

The Belmont site in Elmont is controlled by the New York Racing Authority and sits about 19 miles east of Manhattan, just outside of Queens.

Not surprisingly, fans applauded the reports the team would be headed back across the city limits to Nassau County.

Owners John Ledecky and Scott Malkin have expressed that Belmont is the only option the Islanders have for a possible local relocation. It was sad. They were a big part of the identity and the culture of Long Island, and the Barclays Center is great, but they weren't on Long Island anymore.

The Islanders played at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for decades, calling the arena home from 1972-2015.

The Islanders are in desperate need of a new home and the news of a possible winning bid can not come soon enough.
