Republican Sen. John McCain has returned to Arizona to celebrate Christmas with his family and will miss the vote on the GOP tax bill.

The doctor treating McCain at Walter Reed, Dr. Mark Gilbert, Chief of Neuro-Oncology at the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Cancer Institute, says McCain has responded well to treatment he's undergone for a viral infection, and his underlying cancer is "responding positively to ongoing treatment".

President Trump told reporter's on Sunday that he spoke to McCain's wife, Cindy, and wished the couple well.

McCain in July was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer, which was revealed after he underwent a surprise emergency July 14 craniotomy to remove a blood clot above his left eye. "They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his vote - which hopefully we won't", Trump told reporters.

Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate, and McCain and Sen. This means that, even with McCain's absence, the GOP can suffer one more defection and still get the bill through. John McCain (R-Ariz.) would return to Washington if his vote was needed to pass the tax overhaul bill.
