Now, the famed pop-punk rocker has used his connections within the USA government to release the first "official" footage of UFOs.

His interest in UFOs was piqued by conversations with billionaire entrepreneur Robert Bigelow, whose aerospace company was tapped to conduct much of the research for AATIP's UFO sightings, Reid told the Times. Bigelow researchers also interviewed people who reported feeling physiological changes after encounters with UFOs, as well as soldiers who saw these unknown flying objects.

That included the videoed fighter jet chase, when the pilots followed the UFO from the aircraft carrier Nimitz off the coast of San Diego in 2004.

In the program's heyday, it was allotted about $22 million to study an array of space-related phenomena that could not easily be explained, usually involving the appearance of high-speed, unidentified aircraft, which often "maneuvered so unusually and so fast that they seemed to defy the laws of physics", as Politico put it. The Navy pilots can be heard trying to understand what they are seeing.

"What was considered yesterday as science fiction is now a scientific fact", the New York Times quoted him as saying in a 2009 Pentagon document.

Elizondo resigned from the position in October due to his frustration over the Pentagon's lack of funding and attention to his efforts, the report said.

Reid, who retired from Congress earlier this year, said he is proud that he started the program while serving in public office.

Politico suggests there may have been a more earthly motive for the programme, with one congressional staffer telling the news site that is may have been set up to monitor the technological progress of rival foreign powers, namely Russian Federation and China.

Calling it a historic decision, Prasad said: 'Many state governments have supported the move to introduce this bill. We are all citizens in a democracy and living in the 21st century.

Bigelow told the Times that, "Internationally, we are the most backward country in the world on this issue". In the New York Times, many scientists warn: not knowing where an object is coming from does not mean it's coming from another planet or galaxy.

Who knows what else the AATIP program uncovered? "If America doesn't take the lead in answering these questions, others will".

Funding for the programme was terminated in 2012. Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, who has had a long-held interest in space phenomena, according to the newspaper. "Our scientists are scared of being ostracized, and our media is scared of the stigma".

Former director Luis Elizondo revealed that he continued the investigations on behalf of the Navy and Central Intelligence Agency for another five years until he quit in October 2017.

Although government funding for the program was gutted in 2012, the program continued operating under the leadership of Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence official.

But the Pentagon was less clear about whether the UFO program continued to hover somewhere in the vast expanse of the defense establishment.

It added: "The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed".
