Twitter suspends accounts of far-right British group retweeted by Trump

Twitter begins enforcing new anti-hate speech rules

Though the suspensions sparked outrage among far-right groups, Twitter's move was anything but sudden.

While Twitter is stepping up its online safety efforts, not all users have agreed with how the company enforces its rules.

Fransen hogged the global limelight when US President Donald Trump retweeted in November some of her posts featuring controversial anti-Muslim videos.

The leaders of far-right group Britain First are among the first in the United Kingdom to have their Twitter accounts suspended in a new crackdown by the social network.

It was the latest in a steady rollout of policies Twitter hopes will make the social network more approachable for non-users and more palatable for women and people of color - two groups that are among Twitter's most loyal and most vulnerable to the barbs of Internet trolls and abusers.

Twitter began enforcing new rules to combat hateful and abusive content Monday and a number of well-known far-right organizations and users were suspended.

"Social media companies have more to do to prevent harm on their sites", he added.

N.Korea rejects United States offer of talks
According to Reuters , Washington is expected to release an official statement on the matter on Tuesday. Days after the assault, security researchers began to suspect North Korea was behind the attack.

The changes announced last month broaden Twitter's "hateful conduct policy" to permanently suspend any account-covering usernames, profile bios and display names-that displays "violent threats, multiple slurs, epithets, racist or sexist tropes, incites fear or reduces someone to less than human".

As a private company, Twitter has the legal right to block any speech it wants, since the First Amendment only applies to government control of speech. Moving away from its free-speech stance that anything goes and users can self regulate well enough to weed out problematic tweets, Twitter this year took a more hard-line position.

Hateful imagery includes logos, symbols, or images aimed at promoting hostility and malice based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.

Twitter did not provide a list of other accounts that have been immediately affected, and the company did not respond to Ars' request for comment pre-publication.

Accounts that affiliate with organisations that use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes also violate Twitter's revised policies.

In addition to Golding and Fransen, the BBC reports that American Nazi Party, the Traditionalist Working Party and other neo-Nazi or alt-right accounts have been suspended for failing to comply with Twitter's new policy.

'We'll evaluate and iterate on these changes in the coming days and weeks, and will keep you posted on progress along the way.
