China calls for unity of int'l community over Jerusalem issue

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozda─č on Tuesday criticized the US for vetoing a resolution condemning President Donald Trump's decision on Jerusalem at the U.N. Security Council.

The move comes less than two weeks after Washington moved to recognize the holy city as Israel's capital and begin the process to move its embassy there from Tel Aviv - the city where all other nations house their main diplomatic facilities.

Key US allies Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Ukraine were among the 14 countries in the 15-member council that backed the measure asserting that any decisions on the status of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded".

Haley was adamant that "the United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy".

Al Jazeera reports that the draft "did not mention the USA by name", in an apparent effort to keep Washington from using its power of veto.

After the vote, Haley lashed out at the other members of the Council, calling the proceedings "an insult" that "won't be forgotten".

Since the advent of Trump's presidency, U.S. policy has grown increasingly hostile towards the Palestinian factions, edging closer in support of Israel.

"The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America's role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us", said Haley.

Haley says missile parts prove Iran violating United Nations resolutions
Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said the evidence was compelling but cautioned that not everyone on the Security Council may agree. The point of the press conference, she said, was to begin a public campaign that highlights Iran's misdeeds.

In the statement, Hamas urged the global community and the Arab and Islamic world to act for the preservation of Jerusalem and holy places and warned Israel not to take steps to change Jerusalem's present status. Thank you, President Trump. "Thank you, Nikki Haley".

The Palestinians condemned the United States veto as "unacceptable" and vowed to turn to the UN General Assembly to push for a resolution condemning the decision.

"Given the chance to vote again", said Haley to the Council, "I can say with complete confidence, we would vote no and exercise our veto power".

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters after meeting with the General Assembly president that he expects a vote this week.

The vetoed resolution would have demanded that all countries comply with 10 resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city's final status be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

US Vice President Mike Pence will visit Jerusalem on Wednesday, wading into the crisis over one of the most controversial issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was "unacceptable and threatens the stability of the worldwide community because it disrespects it". The draft resolution had included a call on all countries to refrain from opening embassies in Jerusalem, reflecting concerns that other governments could follow the US lead.
