Trump says would like to have Russia's help with North Korea

During their call, Mr Trump and Mr Putin also discussed ways to work together to address North Korea's nuclear and ballistic weapons program, the White House said.

"The primary point was to talk about North Korea, because we would love to have his help on North Korea".

The two presidents spoke by phone following Mr Putin's annual press conference in Moscow, where Mr Putin was asked to assess Mr Trump's first year in office.

The Kremlin yesterday said that President Vladimir Putin and his USA counterpart Donald Trump had agreed in a phone call to exchange information about North Korea and cooperate on possible initiatives to resolve a crisis around the Asian nation. If true, that would contradict Trump's assertion that China is "helping" with the situation.

"China is helping. Russian Federation is not helping, we would like to have Russia's help - very important".

North Korea has fired 23 missiles during 15 exercise tests since February, this year.

Tillerson later in remarks to the United Nations Security Council in NY said the United States is calling on Russian Federation and China to go beyond sanctions already imposed by the council and cut off all oil shipments as well as end guest worker programs for thousands of North Korean workers.

"North Korea must earn its way back to the table", Tillerson told the United Nations council. But Russia is inextricably linked to any discussions regarding North Korea, so Trump also doesn't have much of a choice.

On December 4, South Korea's and the US' air forces launched the biggest-ever joint drills Vigilant Ace 18 on the Korean Peninsula. That said, the same is true for dozens of other nations, including China, who all seem to be acting in violation of the U.N. sanctions. Tillerson suggested there would be no nuclear-related preconditions to talks with North Korea, but the White House swiftly rebuked his claim. "The pressure campaign must and will continue until denuclearization is achieved".

North Korea has continuously sparked fears of the outbreak of World War 3 as Kim Jong-un refuses to give up his ambitions to become the "world's strongest nuclear power".

"If the North Koreans conduct an additional test of a nuclear bomb - their seventh - I would say 70 per cent".
