Protesters picket Verizon in Times Square over 'net neutrality'

In an interview on NPR's 1A, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said consumers won't be hurt by the ending of net neutrality.

Net neutrality refers to the concept of internet service providers, or ISPs, treating all internet traffic equally. Net Neutrality supports our freedom of speech.

"If the FCC's plan to undermine Title II net neutrality goes through, we will have a corporate-managed internet where it's harder for us to share and access the sort of content that makes the Internet so powerful", Access Humboldt Executive Director Sean McLaughlin wrote in a statement announcing the December 7 protest, held outside the Verizon on Broadway in Eureka.

This following the FCC's proposal to end the open internet order and rollback net neutrality protections. "The FCC regulates the internet so those events don't occur".

Demonstrators marched outside a Verizon store in Kenwood Thursday. These net neutrality rules were passed in 2015, and have broad support from groups ranging from civil liberty organizations to internet giants like Google.

However, she also noted that "the outcry from beyond the Beltway is beginning to change many minds in Washington", and "phones are ringing off the hook on Capitol Hill as people take to the streets to put the public need for an open internet before the demands of Verizon lobbyists".

The protest's website includes a map of almost 600 locations in the U.S. where actions will take place throughout the day, from 8:00AM on the east coast to 6:00PM on the west. In fact, net neutrality prevents regulation of the web billion-dollar monopoly corporations like Verizon and AT&T.

Several protesters expressed their worry that the fate of net neutrality was being decided in a less than democratic way or that the end of net neutrality would allow political content to be restricted on the internet.
