Jeremy Hunt tells Facebook to ‘stay away from my kids

Parents will have to register and create their child's profile in the app, and set a list of contacts whom they can chat, video call, or interact.

If you're interested in testing it out, Messenger Kids is now available for Apple products in the United States only. With Messenger Kids, she said, Facebook has thought through what's appropriate for kids.

In a statement explaining the new app, Facebook said: "To give kids and parents a fun, safer solution, we built Messenger Kids, a standalone app that lives on kids' tablets or smartphones but can be controlled from a parent's Facebook account".

But, only a handful of messaging and social apps - like Kudos, a photo-sharing app - are designed for younger children to use with parental permission and supervision.

Some of these guidelines ensure that the kids' welfare is the topmost priority while keeping them entertained when using the new Facebook app.

But some consumer advocacy groups question whether the app will remain free of ads in the future and if Facebook will use the data to target parents with ads.

Jesse also points out that everyone has Facebook friends that they're not really friends with or whose invitation they accepted even if they didn't really want to, and those people now can see that a person's child is available on an online messaging service. Balkam also stated that the millions of kids under 13 are already on Facebook, with or without their parents' approval. The app requires an adult with a Facebook account to set up the app for his child. But, per the app's privacy policy, Facebook reserves the right to share information with third parties, which must in turn have their own privacy policies to protect children. As with Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat, children can add filters or playful drawings to the photos they send.

Nationwide, parents like Harrell are facing a familiar dilemma: At what age should they allow their kids to use social media?

"My advice: Until you see Zuckerberg's kids using it, stay away", McLane wrote in a public Facebook post.

The outage follows a similar problem for Facebook Messenger on November 30, when users reported being unable to send messages. Facebook plans to release Android and Amazon versions next year. For now the social network giant has announce it only for IOS devices.
