Amazon Prime Launches In Singapore, Subscription Starts From $2.99/Month
Singapore is the 16th country and the first in South-east Asia to launch AmazonPrime.
Amazon has announced the launch of its Prime service in Singapore, which provides customers exclusive access to benefits such as fast shipping, streaming and gaming.
Free two-day shipping is very important to Amazon Prime members - so much, in fact, that they would cancel their membership if it wasn't offered. The monthly membership is priced at SGD8.99, but it is going at SGD2.99 as an introductory offer. Starting from this week, in any case, it is putting forth its full Prime package which incorporates the free global transporting on orders of over SG$40 and memberships to its Prime Video administration and Prime Twitch advertising.
But for a limited period, it goes for $2.99 a month, although Amazon did not specify for how long.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Ghani acknowledged that some living in the country already have Amazon Prime memberships for the U.S. site.
The Prime launch, a first in Southeast Asia, will see Amazon expanding its reach in the region even as Chinese rival Alibaba already sells merchandise from its online Taobao stores through a regional e-commerce subsidiary, Lazada.
He added that Prime membership is "country-specific and not-transferable" so those with United States memberships are unable to use it locally, and that he encouraged Singaporeans "to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore".
These services would be sought now that the American retailer has ended its Free AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping service to Singapore.
"Amazon's dominance in retail has been the primary focus of retail executives, investors and board members - yet, the solution to steal back both market share and consumers' loyalty have evaded most traditional retail brands", said Michael Osborne, CEO of SmarterHQ, in a press release. "Customers in Singapore have been enjoying ultra-fast delivery with Prime Now since July, and now, the introduction of Amazon Prime will take their shopping experience to the next level", said Jamil Ghani, vice president, Amazon Prime worldwide.
