Airline industry profits soar 11 percent in 2017

Global Air Freight Demand Slows

Global Air Freight Demand Slows

Overall revenues are expected at $824 billion, up 9.4 percent on 2017's $754 billion.

But not all the forecasts are so positive, with passenger demand measured in revenue passenger kilometres set to rise by only 6 percent, slightly less than 2017's 7.5 percent increase.

With global profitability now on a more sustainable footing, IATA said airlines' main focus was on keeping costs under control, with rising fuel prices and labour costs set to weigh.

In good news for airline investors, the industry's return on capital is expected to exceed its cost of capital for a fourth year in a row next year.

In its latest forecast, Iata also hoisted its 2017 global profitability forecast for the second time this year. "More routes are being opened".

The net profit figure of $38.4 billion next year is an improvement on the $34.5 million expected for 2017, itself an increase from the previous forecast of $31.4 billion.

The biggest challenge to airline profits was still rising costs, specifically oil prices and labour costs.

However, IATA said it was not concerned there was a pilot shortage after high-profile cancellations at Ryanair and American Airlines due to rostering issues and after some US airlines awarded high pay increases to pilots this year.

Airlines in North America generate almost half of airline revenue across the globe and the largest net profit with $15.6 billion this year.

In the Asia-Pacific region, including India, airlines are expected to register profits of $9 billion in 2018, which would be marginally higher than $ 8.3 billion projected for this year. "Governments are not meeting their responsibility to provide sufficient infrastructure for the industry to meet demand", de Juniac said. "To continue to deliver on our full potential, governments need to raise their game-implementing global standards on security, finding a reasonable level of taxation, delivering smarter regulation and building the cost-efficient infrastructure to accommodate growing demand", De Juniac added.

He said the aviation industry benefits to the economy include 2.7 million direct jobs and support for 3.5 per cent of global economic activity.

IATA's statistics show that, when compared to the same month in 2016, passenger traffic in China grew by an impressive 10 percent in October. Aviation is the business of freedom and a catalyst for growth and development.
