Suspected Israeli Missiles Target Syrian Base

Reports: Syrian Army Intercepts Missiles Near Damascus

Israeli missiles struck a military position near the Syrian capital of Damascus overnight, but Syria's air defense thwarted them, the country's state television reported on Saturday.

Foreign media reported over the weekend that Israeli forces attacked an Iranian military base in Syria.

Although the air defences responded to the attack, intercepting two of the missiles, the rest caused damage to the base.

The Israeli military has not confirmed that it carried out the strike.

Arab media reports said Israel fired missiles at a military base Iran has been building near the Syrian city of al-Qiswa, reportedly destroying an arms depot.

The surface-to-surface missiles were aimed at "military targets" to the south-west of Damascus, although Syrian air defences managed to down some of the projectiles, SANA news agency claimed. Israel has vowed to combat Iranian influence in Syria to defend its own interests in the region.

The Israeli aggression caused material damage to the site, according to the sources. Sky News said the strike had been conducted with air-to-surface missiles from Lebanese airspace.

Israel has long warned that Iran is trying to establish a permanent presence in Syria. Israel also shot down a reconnaissance drone it believed was operated by Syria.

Earlier on September 7, at least two Syrian soldiers were killed while Israeli jets targeted an army position in Hama province, a few days after Syrian army had successfully broke Daesh siege in Dayr al-Zawr.
