The sun rose, you woke up, and Qualcomm sued Apple three times

In other related news, WSJ earlier reported that Apple wont use Qualcomm components in its 2018 iPhone and iPad lineup.

These lawsuits allege that Apple is infringing 16 Qualcomm patents with the iPhone 7, 8, and X that run on AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States, as well as the bigger-screened Plus models.

The iPhone maker's accusation that Qualcomm is behaving like a patent troll - a company that hoards intellectual property without making any real products, generating most of its money from lawsuits - marks a new low in the pair's relationship.

The patents relate to a range of technologies including power management, machine learning and technology that makes phone calls clearer. The rhetoric has been strong too, in this complaint, Qualcomm says that Apple's products "would lose much of their consumer appeal" without Qualcomm technologies.

"You can't react that quickly to file lawsuits", Rosenberg said.

On Thursday, just hours after Apple filed a suit alleging that Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips infringe on eight of its battery patents, the tit-for-tat battle stepped up a notch with the launch of three new lawsuits.

Apple declined to comment beyond the filing. Qualcomm has demanded a court trial and an injunction on the infringing devices including the iPhone X, iPhone 8 series, and the iPhone 7 series in the US. The complaint sought a ban on Apple's handsets that are powered by chips from rival manufacturer, Intel, based on the said patent violations.

Embattled Qualcomm is also facing a daily fine of €580,000 for withholding information from European Union antitrust regulators.

In its filing, Apple alleges that Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 and 820 processors, which power phones from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Alphabet Inc's Google's Pixel phones, infringe on those patents.

Generally whenever Apple announces a new iPhone it also announces a new System-on-a-Chip, and this year was no different. Over the four-day shopping period, buyers purchased about 6 million iPhone X units. That covers the devices sold directly by AT&T and T-Mobile. That's a huge number considering the device has been around for only about three weeks, was facing supply issues, and is the most expensive iPhone ever.
