In this venture, Tesla delivered as promised, and well ahead of Musk's 100-day deadline, with the battery coming to life just 63 days after the grid connection-agreement was signed.
"The world's largest lithium ion battery will be an important part of our energy mix, and it sends the clearest message that South Australia will be a leader renewable energy with battery storage", Weatherill said of the battery when it was completed in November.
The 100-megawatt Li-ion battery is paired to a neighbouring wind farm called Hornsdale Wind Farm, owned by a private French firm Neoen, to bring greater reliability and stability to the state's electricity grid.
The launch comes after the battery was put under a regulatory testing period that examined the battery's ability to charge to, and from, Australia's National Energy Market and it's ability to act as a generator. That's no small feat considering the battery is the size of a football field and is capable of powering 30,000 homes.
More importantly for the residents of South Australia, they hope the Tesla's Powerpack system can begin to solve some of the massive energy problems experienced over past summers plagued by blackouts, noted the publication.
"Neoen is focused on delivering long-term, sustainable energy solutions to the country and ambitious projects like the Hornsdale Power Reserve will contribute to South Australia leading the way into a clean energy future".
"This is history in the making", Premier Jay Weatherill said.
Over the past year and a half, South Australia has been hit by a series of blackouts.
Meanwhile, opponents of the South Australia's new pro-renewable energy solution argue that the battery is a "Hollywood Solution" in a country that still relies on fossil fuels, mainly coal, for two-thirds of its electricity.
