In his later remarks, the president told the crowd how long he'd been waiting to say "Merry Christmas", a nod to his 2016 campaign promises that Americans would be "saying Merry Christmas again".

Co-hosts Dean Cain and Kathie Lee Gifford were with the president and first lady Melania Trump as the switch lit up the Christmas tree, adorned in blue and yellow lights. "We are called to serve one another, to love one another, and to pursue peace in our hearts and all throughout the world".
The night was a big outing for the Trump family, including the president's daughters Tiffany and Ivanka, who was with her three children and husband, Jared Kushner; as well as his son Donald Jr and his wife Vanessa.

The First Lady unveiled on Monday the White House's Christmas decoration and said that "the President, Barron, and I are very excited for our first Christmas in the White House".
In 2017, that Christmas spirit is now on full display at the White House. To qualify for the national contest, growers must first win their state or regional competitions, so being named National Grand Champion is a major achievement.
