01 December 2017, 06:39 | Damon Campbell
2017 hurricane season officially ends Thursday
From F to O on the list, we saw 10 hurricanes back-to-back. It ranks as the most destructive and among the busiest on record. Six of those storms reached major status including Irma, which affected our area.
Overall, we had seventeen named storms that formed throughout the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.
The season began with Tropical Storm Arlene, which was only the second tropical storm observed in April since the use of satellites in weather data collection. Residents on the island and in the surrounding islands are still recovering more than a month later. On Sept. 8, more ACE was generated than any other day in recorded history, dating to 1851. Maria would form just a couple of weeks later.
October alone was 40 percent more active than normal.
In late August, Harvey fell apart over the Caribbean, but fired back up in the Bay of Campeche to a tropical storm and quickly became a Category 4 hurricane with 130 miles per hour winds on Aug. 25.
Hurricane Harvey Recovery: Strength and resilience after the storm
"The 2017 hurricane season was extremely active". It was the greatest rainfall amount recorded from a single storm in US history. Harvey devastated the Texas coast for six days with constant heavy rain that caused deadly flooding. The intensity of the hurricanes of 2017 is notable however, it is unusual to have eight storms reach major hurricane strength, which is Category 3 or higher. - The hurricane completely destroyed the island of Barbuda with 185 miles per hour winds as it passed over the Caribbean island.
Over a thousand deaths, and with an estimated $360 billion in damages, to say the 2017 hurricane season was active, would be an understatement.
Hurricane Irma hits Miami on September 10, 2017. "These funds will help Floridians rebuild their lives following the devastation of Hurricane Irma". The previous record: Hurricane Frances in 1980. It then smashed into Puerto Rico as its strongest landfalling hurricane since 1928. - The first Category 5 hurricane to hit the Bahamas since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Even once the heart of hurricane season passed, another record-setting storm was still to come. Also outside of the continental US, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico as a Category 5 storm. After losing its tropical characteristics, Ophelia's winds caused massive wildfires in Portugal and Spain.
