George Clooney Will Star in and Direct 'Catch 22' Series

The series doesn't have a network yet, with Paramount Television and Anonymous Content now shopping it around in a feverish bidding war.

George Clooney is attached to star in and direct a limited series based on "Catch-22", Variety has confirmed. Shooting will start early next year.

Set in Italy, the six-part series follows the story of Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier who doesn't like the increasing number of flight missions being assigned.

Catch-22 - originally adapted into a feature film in 1970 from Paramount Pictures and directed by Mike Nichols and starring Alan Arkin, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin and Bob Newhart.

The adaptation is to be co-written by Luke Davies and David Michôd. People who were mentally unfit were not obliged to fly missions, but those who applied to stop flying were said to be showing a rational concern for his safety and were therefore sane and had to fly.

Clooney will star as Colonel Cathcart, and will direct with Smokehouse Productions partner Grant Heslov ("The Men Who Stare at Goats"). Clooney exited the show in 1999, and Catch-22 is his first major television project since. On the big-screen, Clooney's work includes an Oscar win for his supporting turn in Syriana and as part of the cast of best picture victor Argo. He and Heslov are repped by CAA. If he makes any attempt to avoid those missions, he'll be in a total "Catch-22" because of a "hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule".
