North Korea is under heavy worldwide pressure to end its nuclear and missile programmes, pursued in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, but has vowed never to give up its nuclear arsenal which it says it needs to counter perceived US aggression.

The North Korean soldier made the unsafe crossing between the two countries on Monday, and was immediately taken to hospital after being shot five times during his escape.

Dr Lee added: "I've never seen anything like this in my 20 years as a physician".

Dozens of flesh-coloured parasites, one of which was 27cm (11 inches) long, were found in the man's digestive tract during life-saving operations, according to the lead surgeon, Lee Cook-jong. The young man was rushed to hospital in South Korea by helicopter where he has undergone two rounds of emergency surgery.

The US wants a diplomatic solution to North Korean crisis, but says missile tests must end.

The soldier was shot by his comrades Monday as he crossed the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.

While the contents of the defector's stomach do not necessarily reflect the wider population, his status as a soldier with an elite assignment suggests he would at least be as well nourished as an average North Korean.

Parasitic worms were also common in South Korea between 40 and 50 years ago, Lee said, but disappeared as economic conditions improved.

Parasites are reportedly widespread in North Korea and can often be the result of consuming vegetables fertilised with human faeces.

"By the 1990s, the state could not supply it any more, so farmers started to use a lot of night soil instead".

Visiting Seoul last week, US President Donald Trump warned North Korea he was prepared to use the full range of American military power to stop any attack, but also urged Pyongyang to "make a deal". A study in 2009 found preschool children in the North were up to 13cm shorter and up to 7kg lighter than those brought up in the South.

THE Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) has reiterated its call to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons as it expressed "grave concern" over North Korea's missile tests, saying these "seriously threaten peace and stability" in the region.

Parasites can enter the body in a number of ways - such as insect bites - but it is believed that many people in North Korea are likely to be infected as a result of contaminated food.
