TransCanada issued a statement Thursday afternoon after the Keystone Pipeline leaked approximately 210,000 gallons in South Dakota. They also said the shut down does not affect the Marketlink pipeline system, which uses the facilities of the southern leg of the Keystone system from Cushing to the Gulf Coast.
TransCanada has not given a reason for the incident, which occurred days before the Nebraska Public Service Commission was due to announce a decision on Keystone XL, a 830,000-barrel expansion through the state.
A TransCanada crew shut down the pipeline at 6 a.m. Thursday morning after detecting an oil leak along the line, the company said. The section of pipe along a right-of-way about 35 miles south of the Ludden pump station in Marshall County, South Dakota, was isolated within 15 minutes and emergency response procedures were activated.

At least 210,000 gallons of crude oil derived from oil sands-a thicker, sticker type of oil than conventional crude-spilled from the pipeline into an agricultural area, according to South Dakota's environment and natural resources agency. It already had been approved by most of the states along the route. The Keystone XL pipeline has been opposed by environmental and Native American groups since it was proposed past year.
Keystone carries crude from the oil sands in Canada to refineries in IL and Texas, and to a distribution center in Oklahoma.
The same pipeline leaked about 17,000 gallons previous year near Freeman, South Dakota. That's the equivalent of 5,000 barrels of oil. In 2010, the first year it was in use, there were 35 Keystone leaks in the USA and Canada. The project has been delayed for several years and was revived this year through an executive order by President Trump.
