Thanksgiving travel to grow, despite higher gas prices

AAA says Orlando is America's most popular travel destination over the holiday, while Hertz says it is expected to be the busiest airport in the nation in terms of vehicle rentals. This would be a 3.3 percent increase over a year ago, and be the highest number of travelers since 2005.

In Florida, more than 2.6 million residents will travel at least 50 miles from their home for the holiday, a 3.2 percent increase over past year. What is interesting is gas prices in Wisconsin are likely to be at their highest since 2014.

In Massachusetts, more than 1.1 million people expect to travel over Thanksgiving, and more than 975,000 of them will go by auto, AAA said.

Some 45.5 million U.S. road-trippers will set off to grandma's house and other destinations during the Thanksgiving holiday, the highest volume seen nationwide since 2005. "Idaho has experienced a seasonal price drop, but it's been slower than in recent years", Conde said.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 26.

Two Florida cities - Orlando and Fort Lauderdale - are expected to rank among the county's top 10 Thanksgiving destinations, AAA said. "These factors are fueling a confident consumer, who is expected to maintain a high level of spending that should drive an increase in holiday travel".
