Prosecutors say escaped psych patient that flew to SJ has 'criteria of classic serial killer'

Saito was sent to the hospital in 1981 after acknowledging he shot Sandra Yamashiro with a pellet gun and then repeatedly stabbed her in her vehicle, which was parked at a shopping mall, according to court records.

Sources confirm that despite Saito's unsafe past and violent tendencies, he was allowed to roam the grounds of the hospital freely, with a requirement that he check in with staff periodically.

The court has repeatedly denied his release from the hospital claiming he suffers from sadism and necrophilia - adding that Saito fits "all the criteria of a serial killer".

The killer first broke free from the Hawaii State Hospital on Sunday.

Deputies say a man who escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Hawaii has been captured in San Joaquin County.

Psychiatrists who evaluated him over the years also said he could be personable, charming and had good social skills.

Irving Tam, who has lived near the hospital for about 30 years, said he heard about the escape from a neighbour, not the police, hospital or media, and that patients have gotten out several times in the past.

Police say Saito escaped the state psychiatric facility on Oahu, where he had been detained since 1981 after being found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Honolulu CrimeStoppers Sgt. Chris Kim says he was notified that Randall Saito was apprehended Wednesday.

One hospital staffer told Hawaii News Now he believes Saito must have gotten outside help to coordinate his escape. Police say he left the facility around 9 a.m. and never returned.

"He said, 'I flew from Hawaii to San Jose and then I caught a cab to Stockton, '" Hamman said.

Randall Saito, who is considered extremely unsafe, was detained near Stockton after a cab driver tipped off officers, San Joaquin Sheriff spokesman Dave Konecny said.

Maui County police say Saito flew to Maui shortly after he left the hospital, but they don't know where he is now. There, he got on an airliner and arrived in San Jose, California, arriving two hours before the hospital reported him missing.

Saito now faces a a felony escape charge from the Hawaii Attorney General's Office. "He's a very unsafe individual with respect to whom all the predictors indicate that if he were to be released, he would kill again".

Saito was considered "extremely risky and should not be approached", the Honolulu Police Department warned.

He paid $1,500 for the chartered plane ticket, according to Maui Now. That flight landed about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Authorities describe Saito as extremely unsafe, yet he was missing for almost 10 hours before hospital officials notified authorities.

The Hawaii State Department of Health, which runs the Hawaii State Hospital, said earlier it was "cooperating with law enforcement officials to provide them with the information they need in order to conduct their search for the missing patient".
