'Lord of the Rings' TV Series in the Works at Amazon!

Amazon is turning The Lord of the Rings into a TV show

Amazon Is Making a Lord of the Rings Prequel Series

As in a multi-season binge-worthy TV series with spin-offs and more.

A spokesperson for the Tolkien estate said the Amazon team will "bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings".

The former head of Amazon's studio, Roy Price, who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations last month, said in September that the company was seeking a big hit along the lines of "Game of Thrones", according to Fortune.

Amazon has officially greenlit one show that it hopes to rule them all.

But there is no indication of whether it will also take place before The Hobbit. That leaves two options: Amazon could plumb the depths of the appendices of The Return of the King, potentially detailing the early romance of Aragorn and Arwen, the creation of the Rings of Power and the history of the line of kings from which Aragorn is descended. In a release, Amazon noted that the series will be set in Middle-earth and will "explore new storylines" that precede The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in the famous trilogy in which Frodo Baggins and his eclectic cohort attempt to rid their land of the all-powerful ring.

It was recently reported that Warner Bros Television and Amazon Studios were in talks to produce a TV version of J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. Amazon has a plethora of material to choose from.

A Lord of the Rings series had been rumoured, but on Monday the streaming service confirmed it had acquired rights to Tolkien's work and would be pursuing the project with a potential spin-off.

The newest TV installment from Middle Earth is headed to Amazon. If Amazon is looking for an opportunity to add the sex, violence, and soap opera drama to Tolkien's world that have made shows like Game of Thrones so successful, this kind of approach would certainly offer the opportunity. It came with an upfront rights payment said to be in the $200 - $250 million range, though some sources say the fee could be slightly below $200 million.
