Charlie Fry, 25, was at Avoca Beach, north of Sydney, on Monday when the shark "jumped out of the water and hit him in the right shoulder", reports the BBC.
Mr Fry told The Daily Telegraph he felt something hit his right shoulder, and turned to look just moments before the predator sunk its teeth into him.
He explained: "I just punched it in the face with my left hand and then managed to scramble back on my board, shout at me friends and luckily a wave came, so I just sort of surfed the wave in".
The man was taken to Gosford Hospital by his friends after he sustained scratches and a puncture wound. "So yeah, it was a bit of a close call!"
Despite the incident, Fry said he was still keen to get back in the water.
He said: "Me and my friends have just started surfing, and we saw the YouTube clip of Mick Fanning saying he punched a shark in the nose". Lifeguards suspected that the shark had been attracted towards the surfer by a combination of warm water, a lot of fish nearby and Fry's location in a deep channel.
