Same-Sex Marriage: 'Yes' Victory In Sight As Opponents Circle The Wagons

Joe Spagnolo believes many people have had enough of the same-sex marriage debate

The votes have been counted, and this is what Australia voted for in the same-sex marriage postal vote.

Despite some early criticisms that the use of the postal system would make the survey inaccessible, an overwhelming 79.5 per cent of Australian voters did participate, in what the Chief Statistician called an "outstanding" turnout.

While Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull supports same-sex marriage, many in his right-wing government are opposed to the move.

The latest polls suggest more than 60 per cent of people have voted yes.

If a no vote is returned, Labor leader Bill Shorten has promised that if elected Labor would legalise same-sex marriage within the first 100 days of the 2019 election.

The result was announced by the ABS at 10am on Wednesday, November 15 in Canberra with 61.6 per cent of Australians voting "yes" to Same-Sex marriage.

Australians have voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in a historic non-binding poll.

Mr Turnbull has previously said same-sex marriage would legalised by Christmas if Australians voted Yes and expected the legislation to "sail through parliament".

Same-sex marriage is legal in England, Wales and Scotland.

If it is a yes from the public, then PM Malcolm Turnbull has said a private member's bill will be debated in Parliament, with the PM pushing for a vote before Christmas.

Paterson's bill could override all anti-discrimination laws passed by state and territory level legislatures.

We're less than an hour out from learning the result of the same-sex marriage survey and campaign events are getting under way.

Liberal senators Linda Reynolds and Jane Hume, Labor's Penny Wong and Louise Pratt, the Greens' Richard Di Natale and Janet Rice, Skye Kakoschke-Moore from the Nick Xenophon Team and Derryn Hinch all signed the motion with Smith.

"If the Australian people do vote yes, they're not going to look kindly on the same group of people who have urged a 'no" vote not accepting the outcome and trying to delay further, ' she said.

Some conservatives have suggested they will put forward their marriage bill in the Coalition party room in two weeks, but senior ministers including influential conservative Mathias Cormann have protected the prime minister's position by insisting the parliament will choose which bill and amendments to allow.
