Flynn is accused of meeting with senior Turkish officials in December, a few weeks before Trump's inauguration, to discuss the return of Gulen, who is a rival of Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

The alleged plan emerged during Mueller's wider investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any collusion by the Trump campaign.

This meeting was held in December - after the USA presidential election and during Donald Trump's transition period - as Flynn was preparing to oversee national-security policy at the White House.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Flynn and his son were to be paid as much as $15 million to deliver Fethullah Gülen to the Turkish government.

Flynn, who is President Trump's former national security adviser, and his son Michael Flynn Jr. were allegedly were involved in a plan to deliver Fethullah Gulen to the Turkish government, which views Gulen as a political enemy and has pressed the us for his extradition, The Journal reported. Manafort's lawyers may have a point in complaining, as they have, that the Foreign Agents Registration Act is rarely criminalized and that Mueller shouldn't weaponize it.

Lawyers for Mr Flynn labelled the allegations "outrageous" and "false".

Flynn was sacked after just 24 days as Trump's national security adviser over misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak. And as early as September of previous year, he had discussions with Turkish officials to find ways to deliver on the Gulen plan, according to James Woolsey, the former Central Intelligence Agency director.

According to the two reports, the discussions included details of how Gulen, a Muslim cleric who lives in Pennsylvania and has a large Turkish following, could be flown secretly by private jet to the isolated Turkish prison island of Imrali.

Multiple sources have told NBC News that Mueller has gathered enough evidence to lead to an indictment in the investigation into Flynn and his son.

While he may have been a voice during the 2016 campaign, the revelation that Flynn gave incomplete information as national security adviser cost him his position in the White House.

As a rule, they said, they do not comment on news reports involving their client.

The Mueller investigation into the Flynns is part of an overall probe into the Trump campaign's involvement with Russian Federation.

NBC News also reports this morning that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team has taken an interest in the alleged December 2016 meeting as part of "a line of inquiry regarding Flynn's lobbying efforts on behalf of Turkey".

Nor did the attorney representing the elder Flynn, Robert Kelner. Discussions between Flynn and Turkish representatives reportedly took place there.
