Streaming Dreams Drove Disney's Interest in Fox Assets

Pricing hasn't been announced, and while Iger said that the Disney streaming service will be priced less than a Netflix subscription, he didn't say anything specifically about the pricing strategy for ESPN Plus. All are destined for their planned streaming service and include a new live-action Star Wars series, a Monsters Inc.

Fourth-quarter profit at Disney's cable TV unit, the company's single biggest profit contributor, slumped 1.2 per cent to $1.24 billion, hurt by weak advertising sales and higher programming costs for baseball and football at ESPN.

Disney late Thursday said it intends to price its over-the-top television service "substantially below" the monthly rates Netflix charges. An example being, if a director or show producer has an idea, now Netflix is up against Disney, Hulu, Amazon and more for the rights to the show.

Then, on the company's earnings call, CEO Bob Iger told analysts that Disney's standalone streaming service, which it announced back in August, will be priced "substantially below where Netflix is".

As reported by The Wrap, Iger explained that the price of the service will be connected to the amount of content that it will carry. "But it'll simply launch with less volume, and the price will reflect that", he said. For reference, the cost of a Netflix subscription now ranges from $8 to $14 a month. Disney shares are up almost 7% so far this week, mostly on the reported Fox talks.

Netflix, Inc. shares fell $1.10 (-0.57%) in premarket trading Friday. The show is expected to launch by the end of 2019. Iger said the company just closed a deal with Rian Johnson, who directed the installment that will be released in December, to develop an entirely new Star Wars trilogy. The series was originally ordered for the ABC Family. An global version of the service might release before the USA launch, however, due to streaming rights.
