"As of today, there is understanding that a practical phase of these response measures (in respect of USA media in Russian Federation over demands the RT broadcaster register itself as a foreign agent in the U.S.) will begin next week". Simonyan said that RT will comply, otherwise she could be arrested and the news outlet's accounts frozen.

Zakharova did not specify which outlets would be targeted or what the actions would be.

Moscow responds to a United States demand for RT to register in this category in America.

"Our law on foreign agents does not apply to media". He stressed that foreign agent status could be very risky for RT staff and all those who interact with this TV channel.

Last month, social media giant Twitter took the unprecedented step of banning RT and Sputnik advertisements in response to allegations they were part of a Russian effort to spread misinformation during the 2016 election.

He said some US media in Russian Federation were trying to turn USA public opinion against Moscow.

FARA requires registration "if an agent disseminates informational materials, by mail or by any means or instrumentality of interstate or foreign commerce, and intends the materials to be disseminated among two or more persons".

In the past, the ministry also has mentioned CNN, which does not receive US government funds, but is a frequent target of criticism by the Russian government for what it says is anti-Russian bias in its reporting.

"The Russian side has repeatedly warned that any measures limiting activity of the Russian mass media in the United States will inevitably trigger an immediate symmetrical response, as provided for in the Russian legislation", the Russian Embassy in the U.S.

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment to The Post on Thursday. The decision came in the wake of investigations into Kremlin attempts to interfere in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the State Duma, said the Parliament could back such a legislation as early as next week, arguing that some USA media were attempting to turn public opinion in Russia, Reuters reported.

The Russian law on foreign agents in recent years has been used on nongovernmental groups that do not toe the Kremlin party line.

Human rights groups have condemned the label, who say it echoes Soviet-era attacks on dissidents.
