Donald Trump fires off first tweets under new 280 character limit

Twitter stated in the original announcement that the new character limit stemmed from tweeters being unequally penalized depending on which language he or she tweeted.

Twitter believes that the new character limit will give users twice the space to voice their thoughts and this will thus usher in a new era for the online platform, whose hallmark 140-character cap had encouraged users to craft concise messages.

English, on the other hand, does lend itself to crammed tweets with 9% of English tweets hitting the previous 140 character limit.

However, cricket's governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC) took good use of the new character limit and came up with the following tweet.

Twitter expands to 280 characters.

You were previously limited to 20 characters, but now you have 50 to work with. If we can expect to see the same amount of tweets, does that mean the expanded character limit did not encourage people to tweet more than they usually do? Now it is doubling the number of characters you can use in your display name, which will potentially open things up to further abuse and, therefore, more criticism.

Changing your display name is a simple matter of heading to Settings, but full details are available on Twitter's support pages.

Celtic, for example, used their first 280-character tweet to re-emphasise their longstanding spell of dominance in Scottish football. But Twitter said, "Here, have some more freedom to express yourself. Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis".
