"I have a $1,150 [£877] telephone that can't read the letter "i", wrote Mike Murphy, a technology reporter for news website Quartz, on Twitter.

A number of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users who updated to iOS 11.1 are facing a unusual bug that autocorrects the letter "i" to an "A" with a question mark symbol.

Apple has promised a software patch soon, and in the meantime has provided a way for users to correct the problem themselves. Users can access the Keyboard settings and add a text replacement. Type in an uppercase "I" for the phrase, and a lowercase "i" as the replacement.

While these instructions may be over the top, users will likely have better success with disabling the predictive text auto-correct feature.

But if you are struggling to type the letter "i", follow these steps.

"This iPhone letter "I" glitch is starting to get really annoying".

Apple did not respond to TheWrap's request for comment on an expected fix for the problem, but did post a brief support note on the matter this weekend.

Even then, it isn't just iPhone and iPad users who are affected; since predictive text is delivered to all Apple devices through iCloud, those on Mac are dealing with this issue too.

Plenty of other Apple customers also took to social media to complain about the problem.

For a temporary fix before the next iOS update, users can go to the Settings menu, tap General, then Keyboard, and finally tap Text Replacement. Owners of Apple's watchOS, the operating system for its smartwatches, say their devices are crashing when requesting information related to the weather, according to The Guardian.
