The revelation that Carter Page - a former campaign advisor to President Donald Trump - testified that he gave Attorney General Jeff Sessions a heads-up before taking a trip to Russian Federation in 2016 carries potentially grave implications for the nation's top cop.
Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, who is in charge of the committee's Russian Federation investigation, confirmed to CNN that Page gave such testimony, but minimized its meaning. Page described the conversation to CNN after he finished talking to the House intelligence committee.
Franken asked Sessions during his confirmation hearing on Jan 10 what he would do "if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign".
Page's testimony was one of the more highly anticipated events in the congressional Russia investigations, given the scrutiny he's faced because of his connections to Russia and his visible role pushing back about his Russia ties in nationally televised interviews. While prosecutors say Papadopoulos shared information about his Russian contacts with the campaign, they don't say whether he told superiors about the emails.
"It will come out", he said. Other officials include Trump's former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Revelations that the attorney general was previously in a meeting with former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos and was told about Page's trips to Russian Federation have been raised by lawmakers as a subject of further inquiry.
"Sessions needs to be more forthright to our committee and clarify the record and I intend to write to him about it".

Although Page said his comment to Sessions was only in passing and the trip was unrelated to the campaign, he statements call into question Sessions' testimony to Congress regarding the Trump campaign and any potential ties between it and Russian Federation.
"I would think that Carter page aspect of this is... troubling", Wallace said.
Papadopoulos was named by Trump as a member of his foreign policy advisory panel in March 2016, when the candidate was trying to bolster his credentials as he moved to secure the Republican nomination for president.
Court documents said Clovis told Papadopoulos: "Great work".
"I actually had a previously scheduled meeting with some top US military officers thousands of miles away from Washington", he said.
Before being linked to the federal investigation on Russia, Clovis had already attracted significant attention for past statements on both climate change and gay rights.
