New York Marathon: Shalane Flanagan is first American woman to win race since 1977

An American woman just made history at the annual NYC Marathon

Manuela Schaar won her first New York City Marathon in 1:48:09 after finishing second to American Tatyana McFadden for the past three years.

Flanagan posted an unofficial time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds.

Shalane Flanagan has become the first American woman to win the popular annual marathon in the past 40 years.

Kenya's Mary Keitany, who was chasing her fourth consecutive NY victory, was second with 61 seconds back. A pack of nine competitors consistently jockeyed with Keitany for the lead, including three runners making their NY debut: Kenya's Betsy Saina; Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska; and Sara Dossena, an Italian triathlete.

The men's title went to Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor, who held off countryman Wilson Kipsang.

"This is the moment I have dreamed off since I was a little girl", Flanagan said after the race, tears streaming down her face.

Flanagan is a 16-time national champion across various distances and finished third in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia was third at 2:11:32.

More than 50,000 participants ran the world famous race and some 2.5 million people packed the streets to cheer on the athletes from around the world.

Flanagan's win disrupted the marathon dominance of Kenya's Mary Keitany.

Manuela Schaer stunned five-times champion Tatyana McFadden in the women's race, defeating the American by nearly three minutes in 1:48.09.

Former victor Meb Keflezighi, who was running his final competitive marathon at age 42, finished 11th in 2:15:29.

In the men's wheelchair race, Switzerland's Marcel Hug completed an American clean sweep, crossing the line in 1:37.17 to add to his wins in Boston and Chicago this year. Emmanuel Mutai from Kenya settled second in 2:03:13 followed by Ethiopian Abera Kuma in 2:05:56 and Kamworor 2:06:39.
