The missile was destroyed near Riyadh's King Khaled International Airport, which was functioning normally, it added.

State news channel Al-Ekhbariya said the missile was "of limited size" and no damage was caused.

Saudi Arabia has intercepted a missile fired at the capital Riyadh's airport. A missile with a range of more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) was launched toward Riyadh late Saturday, having flown more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) over the border.

The missile was sacked across Saudi Arabia's southern border by Yemen's Houthi rebels, according to several Houthi-owned media outlets, including Al-Masirah and SABA.

Saudi Arabia is leading a military campaign against the rebels.

A long-range ballistic missile was sacked at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the Houthi TV channel Al-Masirah reported.

Saudi Arabia claims the Shiite Houthi rebels are backed by its regional rival Iran.

The Saudi-led coalition is trying to restore power to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and counter what they say is Iranian influence in its backyard. Iran denies it has provided material support, though it acknowledges its political support of the Houthis.

More than two years on, the war against Houthi rebels has turned into a quagmire for the kingdom and its Arab allies.

Impoverished Yemen has remained in a state of civil war since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. The kingdom has also imposed an air and sea blockade on Yemen.
