Marshfield police: Man locked in beer cooler for 6 hours, drinks beer then leaves

The 38-year-old walked into a Kwik Trip store in Marshfield's Central Avenue on Tuesday night and was automatically locked inside the beer cooler when the clock hit midnight

A man who was accidentally locked inside of a beer cooler at a gas station stayed inside and helped himself to beer overnight.

The man was eventually issued a citation for retail theft by local police.

According to police records, the incident happened at the Kwik Trip on Central Avenue in Marshfield.

"Most people would try to get out when locked in a 40-degree cooler with shorts on, but he just chose to hang out and drink a few beers", Gramza told McClatchy. A customer had noticed the 38-year-old man inside the cooler around 6 a.m., and when employees opened it, he fled.

Brother of Las Vegas Gunman Stephen Paddock Arrested In Los Angeles
Bruce Paddock had been "squatting" inside the business on San Fernando Road following his eviction from a residence, police said. Paddock killed 59 people in the meticulously planned attack and wounded 500 more more before shooting and killing himself.

Marshfield Police Chief Rick Gramza told WAOW that Van Ert "knew that Kwik Trip would not sell him any beer, so he made a decision to remain in the beer cooler". However, Van Ert became trapped in the store's walk-in cooler at midnight, when its lock automatically engaged.

He also fell on top of a stack of Busch Light Cans, WISN reported. The store is open 24 hours, so Van Ert would only have had to knock on the glass to be rescued by an employee.

He was later arrested and taken into custody at the Wood County Jail on a probation hold in an unrelated case. Police said the conditions of Van Ert's probation banned him from consuming alcohol. That probation required him to remain sober.
