The Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.
Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) welcomed the selection of the UN General Assembly yesterday to the State of Qatar for a second term as a member of the Human Rights Council.
All of the Human Rights Council's members are elected by the world body's General Assembly, and it has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.
In a statement after the 193-member General Assembly voted Congo onto the Human Rights Council as part of an uncontested African slate for a three-year term starting January 1, Haley said the rights organization "cannot endure many more blows to its credibility before it is rendered absolutely meaningless".
"When you're in that Council, you're putting yourself forward for scrutiny and then that tells you that Nigeria is ready to scrutinise itself in regards to respect for human rights". That is why the United States is leading an effort to reform the HRC, most recently through a ministerial meeting during UN General Assembly High-Level week, where more than 40 countries called for a more effective HRC.
"Pakistan's entire leadership, parliament and judiciary have all proactively pushed the human rights agenda", Ambassador Lodhi said.
African countries had four candidates for their continent's four seats on the council and Congo got the lowest number of votes 151.
"But where possible, if certain countries appear not to push in the same direction, we ask them to join all other countries in the world in respecting the rights of human beings". Nepal topped the vote, followed by Qatar and Pakistan. Besides the Maldives, Malaysia too had to return home without a membership seat getting just 129 votes in favour.
The 15 new members were elected according to the following pattern: 4 seats for African States; 4 seats for Asia-Pacific States; 2 seats for Eastern European States; 3 seats for Latin American and Caribbean States; and 2 seats for Western European and other States.
