The Latest: Category 1 Hurricane Ophelia grows stronger

Hurricane Ophelia 2017 could bring hurricane conditions to Ireland next week

"A combination of a vigorous Atlantic weather system and the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia will pass close to Ireland on Monday, and has the potential to be a high-impact event in parts of the country", stated Met Eireann.

Hurricane Ophelia is hurtling toward Britain as the storm moves through the Atlantic Ocean and is set to smash through the United Kingdom this weekend.

According to JLT Re's Hurricane Activity report, as of 8am Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) today (13 October) Ophelia had strengthened to a Cat 2 Hurricane, with peak wind speeds of 104 miles per hour.

The hurricane is expected to weaken somewhat Friday night but remain a hurricane for the next couple of days.

The storms will not be a hurricane when it reaches us and Ireland is expected to bear the brunt.

The storm will have lost its tropical features by then, but that's an academic point, because the winds may still be as strong as a hurricane.

"These strong winds are forecast in association with the northward track of ex-Ophelia across or near to the west of the British Isles".

Hurricane Ophelia has picked up speed as it moves to the east-northeast.

Alex Burkhill, a Met Office forecaster, said: "Ophelia became a hurricane overnight and the forecast track takes it eastwards towards Iberia for the weekend".

Experts at the U.S. Hurricane Centre confirmed gusts of 100mph are now emanating from the centre of the hurricane.

The latest NOAA 5am update shows maximum sustained winds are near 85 miles per hour with the highest gusts.
