Trump's immigration plan shows he 'can't be serious,' say Schumer and Pelosi

Sen. Bob Corker R-Tenn. talks to reporters on June 21

The White House wants funding for a border wall, additional immigration enforcement personnel, and a crackdown on unaccompanied minors arriving in the USA, mainly from Central American countries.

The White House sent a 70-point immigration plan to Congressional leaders Sunday after weeks of waiting for the Trump administration's guidelines for a deal that would provide amnesty to roughly 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) beneficiaries. In addition to these measures, the list also wants any new deal to include funding for the Mexican wall project of the President apart from restrictions imposed on legal migration. "If the President was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so", the Schumer-Pelosi statement reads.

That new ultimatum - communicated to Capitol Hill in a legislative proposal shared on Sunday - has already infuriated Democrats and threatens to provoke a similar response in Silicon Valley, where tech giants have been sharply critical of Trump's immigration agenda since the day he entered the White House.

Under Mr Obama's policy, they were able to apply for work and study permits but critics said the scheme amounted to an amnesty for illegal immigrants. Chuck Schumer of NY, and the House Minority Leader, Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, released a joint statement deeming Trump's terms unacceptable.

In responding to a question about how the Dreamers fit into the United States' future workforce, Trump also called for comprehensive immigration reform. As of early September, there were nearly 690,000 active DACA recipients in the country.

Last month, the Trump administration said that it would end DACA and gave Congress six months to come up with immigration legislation.

Corker responds: 'White House has become an adult day care center'
President Trump issued a new volley in his war of words with North Korea with a cryptic pair of tweets posted Saturday afternoon. Former Chattanooga Mayor and current Senator Bob Corker said on September 26th he would not seek re-election in 2018.

"We need better barriers in certain places, we need sensors, we need border roads, we need cameras", the Arizona senator told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program.

He will also want tougher laws for those seeking asylum, and denial of federal grants to "sanctuary cities", officials said on Sunday. Many Democrats want to attach the Dream Act to that must-pass budget package. Rumors have been in circulation that Trump has been planning to support a bill to make it easy for dreamers to gain full legal status.

Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi issued a joint response saying the proposal "goes far beyond what is reasonable".

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-New Mexico) also slammed Trump's proposal and said his "draconian and anti-immigrant principles jeopardize the bi-partisan, bi-cameral progress that has been made to pass a legislative solution that will protect almost 800,000 Dreamers", according to Fox News.

Trump had previously said he wanted a DACA deal to include significant money for border security and eventual funding for his border wall.
