On Sunday, a poll published by the conservative La Razon daily said 79.4 per cent of Spaniards, and 58.9 per cent of Catalans, were against the unilateral declaration of independence Catalan authorities are said to be considering.

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is expected to address the region's parliament tomorrow, when he could unilaterally declare independence.

The apparent threat comes amid heightened tensions between Catalonia and Spain as the wealthy region threatens to break away following an independence referendum held on October 1.

Earlier, thousands of people rallied across the country for Spanish unity.

"But there are two things I would say: firstly, the scenes we saw last Sunday of violence against people just trying to vote were absolutely unacceptable, and everybody, regardless of their views on independence, I think should condemn that". "We are facing a tremendous unknown".

The European Union had not released their statement regarding the issue and also did not show any interest with Catalonia's independence from Spain despite Puigdemont's appeal for Brussels to step in to solve the crisis.

The protests are a repeat of scenes witnessed in Madrid yesterday when far-right demonstrators, brandishing fascists flags and symbols, rallied in the streets against Catalan's independence movement during a massive rally in support of dialogue.

Secession-minded lawmakers are meeting Tuesday in Catalonia and some say that is when they will declare independence for the northeastern region in Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned anew today that Spain will not be divided by a declaration of independence from Catalonia and said the government is ready to respond to any such attempt.

Yet politicians supporting Puigdemont's minority government and civil society groups backing independence say they will not accept anything less than a full declaration of independence.

Puigdemont said in an interview broadcast on Catalan television on Sunday that a law passed by the Catalan parliament preparing the way for the referendum called for a declaration of independence in the event of a "yes" vote.

Marta Gimenez, a recent law school graduate who works for a major Spanish bank, said that the secessionists keep talking about how Catalonia is oppressed.

Ever since Spain's return to democracy in the 1970s, Madrid has struggled to balance the country's patchwork of regional identities, including its decades-long fight to quell separatism in the northern Basque Country led by violent militants ETA.

Some executives aren't waiting to see what happens next, and have protectively moved their headquarters out of Catalonia.

Catalonia accounts for almost a fifth of Spain's economy, and leads all regions in producing 25% of the country's exports, CNNMoney reports.
