People shout slogans against Spanish National Police during a gathering outside a National Police station in Barcelona Spain

"But in Catalonia, the central government in Madrid always says there is nothing to talk about".

"It is shameful they take all that money and they've not said anything about European Union citizens being clubbed, literally clubbed, by police officers".

A video posted on Sunday by Jaume Clotet, the Catalonian government's director of communications, showed the congregation offering a loud applause when the ballot boxes arrive in the church.

Instead, Spain s King Felipe VI sided squarely with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy s government on Tuesday evening as he addressed the nation over an escalating crisis between Catalan separatist leaders and Madrid.

But at that time, all Spaniards were on one side - that of democracy - Romero said.

According to a bill passed by the Catalan parliament in September, the region will declare independence from Spain within 48 hours of a Yes vote.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont kept the rest of Spain guessing on if and when he will declare independence, prolonging the uncertainty over the breakaway region's next, crucial move in its confrontation with the government in Madrid.

The opposition Socialist bloc in the regional parliament, where separatist parties have a narrow majority of seats, had called for Monday's session to be blocked.

If Puigdemont does declare independence, a "transition period" will begin.

The leader of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia accused the King of supporting the position of the central government. The regional government in Barcelona will soon apply the results of its makeshift vote, Puigdemont said, though he stopped short of saying how or when he would trigger the process to leave Spain.

"You have disappointed many Catalans", Puigdemont told the king. "He is deliberately ignoring millions of Catalans".

Last Sunday's secession referendum had been ruled illegal by the Constitutional Court and riot police were sent it to stop it taking place.

Madrid has the power to suspend the semi-autonomous status that Catalonia now enjoys under Spain's system of regional governments.

Scores were injured on Sunday as police moved in en masse, beating voters and protesters as they lay on the ground and dragging some by the hair.

Caixabank (CABK.MC), Spain's third largest lender by market capitalisation, is also considering moving its legal base outside Catalonia, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

The border between Catalonia and the neighbouring region of Valencia cuts right through the community whose 500 residents fear the conflict between Catalan and Madrid authorities will literally split the town in two.

Until now, leaders across Europe have been mute about the Catalan independence bid.

Catalan authorities say around 900 people were injured and that of the almost 2.3 million votes counted, 90 percent voted in favor of an independent Catalan Republic. Now residents are anxious that the escalating conflict between Spanish and Catalan authorities will split the town in two. The vote did not have any census controls, electoral board or official vote-counting teams or global observers of any weight.
