Abortion Bill Passed by House, On Its Way to Senate

White House “Strongly Supports” Bill Banning Abortion After 20 Weeks
"H.R. 36 would generally make it unlawful for any person to perform, or attempt to perform, an abortion of an unborn child after 20 weeks post-fertilization, with limited exceptions", the White House statement says.
The name of the bill functions on the premise that a fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks, an argument made by anti-abortion activists and politicians that has not been scientifically proven.
However, if the bill manages to pass the Senate, the White House has indicated that President Trump would support the measure.
Though a supporter of choice in the past, Donald Trump has embraced the Republican party's anti-abortion positions in an effort to appeal to evangelical voters.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced last week that the House would vote on H.R. 36, calling it legislation that "will respect the sanctity of life and stop needless suffering". So, as our nation's understanding of fetal pain has become more advanced, protections for pain-capable unborn children have been signed into law in 20 states, including my home state of Indiana. Nor can we trust a Republican attorney general such as John Adams - who has called the legal basis of Roe v. Wade'really questionable' - to fight such a ban. The information in the bill, which is sponsored by Republican Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, contradicts what studies actually suggest - that fetuses can not feel pain at that stage.
Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, one of the leading pro-life organizations, issued a statement warning GOP lawmakers that not voting in favor of the bill is "political suicide".
The legislation passed today includes a medically unnecessary, mandatory 48-hour waiting period for rape survivors by requiring adult patients to obtain medical care or counseling from a state-licensed counselor or victims' rights advocate for their assault at least two days prior to receiving abortion services.

The official position of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is that unborn babies are not developed enough to feel pain until 24 weeks. The vote was 237-189, with three Democrats supporting the act. I may not have known at the time that it was him thrashing around inside of me that I felt, but I will never forget the day I found out exactly what took place in a saline abortion and the cruelty I subjected my son to because of pressure from others.
"That's not a near-term priority", Cornyn replied. However, more than a dozen states now ban them after 20 weeks.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case in 2014 involving Arizona's 20-week abortion ban, which was blocked by lower courts.
Left-leaning websites such as Vox claim the bill infringes on women's right to control their bodies.
The Republican-controlled House on Tuesday approved a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy - a measure backed by the Trump White House but still facing long odds in the Senate. Critics maintain the science is iffy, and cite a FactCheck.org page that interviewed experts who say, while a fetus might react at 20 weeks, it is not clear it is feeling pain.
The United States is one of only seven countries that allow elective, late-term abortions without restrictions.
Democrats blasted the bill that they said would hurt the small number of women who learn after five months that their fetus has medical complications that are likely fatal and who seen an abortion.
