Terms of the deal with Heritage Canada see Netflix committing to creating "a multi-purpose film and television production presence" in Canada, marking the first time it has done so outside the US.

The $500 million in original productions in Canada over the next five years would be through the newly created Netflix Canada production company (not to be confused with Netflix Canada the service).

Canada outlined its vision for its cultural and entertainment industries on Thursday, promising more money to foster Canadian content at home and overseas and striking a deal in which streaming service Netflix would invest C$500 million to create programming in the country. Here's to a whole lot more Canadian content!

- Audible, an affiliated company of Amazon, which offers audiobooks on a subscription basis, has launched its Canadian bilingual site with 100 Canadian titles in English and French. Overall, though, the plan plots a course that aims to rework many of Canada's laws and regulations that oversee broadcasting, telecommunications and copyright, as well as the private and publicly supported funds that back musicians, writers and publishers in the coming months. The country doesn't, currently, tax digital players like Netflix.
