However, as NBC points out in their article, the Monday night Cowboys game greatly skews the ratings because last year's Week 3 game had to compete with a presidential debate.

But even if ratings are down year-over-year, the early numbers also indicate that ratings for this week's slate of games could end up being better than they were for the season's first two weeks, even despite the controversy.

The outlet reported that the average rating across all Sunday and Monday game was up 3% compared to the same week in 2016.

Sunday night's game between the Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders scored an 11.6/20, meaning that an estimated 11.6 percent of all metered-market households watched the game and an estimated 20 percent of homes using a television at the time watched, Deadline reports.

The networks saw huge boosts for their pregame shows, though.

There may also be some evidence that Trump's feud with the National Football League anthem kneelers has caused viewers to tune in at the beginning of the game to see whether players stand or kneel, as ratings for pregame shows spiked significantly from a year ago. On the other hand, CBS said its Sunday games were up 4 percent from 2016.

Similarly, the Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange ( NSE ) edged lower to 9,964.40 points, down 150.6 points or 1.19 per cent. In terms of the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index tanked by 2.71 per cent and the small-cap index by 2.93 per cent.

So what does all of this all mean?

NFL teams staged a show of solidarity with protesting players before Sunday's games by kneeling, linking arms or staying off the field during the national anthem, defying President Donald Trump's call for team owners to fire those who refuse to stand.

Overnight ratings can give a glimpse of which way viewership is going, but don't always tell the whole story.

Cowboys-Cardinals got a 9.3 overnight rating for ESPN, easily the highest-rated Monday night game of the year. Nielsen will release viewership data on Tuesday. "Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!"

LeSean McCoy of the Buffalo Bills kneels during the national anthem on Sunday in Orchard Park, New York. ESPN, which also abandoned some of its usual pregame chatter to talk politics, plans to air the anthem live on "Monday Night Football".
