Crime in 2017: A Preliminary Analysis | Brennan Center for Justice

The nation's violent crime rate rose again in 2016, with murder up sharply, according to data released Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"False narratives about a national crime wave will not help". Rape accounted for 7.7 percent of the violent crimes reported a year ago, and murder made up 1.4 percent. "Crime is incredibly geographically concentrated - not between Chicago versus other cities - but even within Chicago, which suggests that any sort of take on what's causing this has to take an incredibly nuanced look because it's not just what makes Chicago different from New York City, it's what makes one neighborhood in Chicago different from other neighborhoods". That includes 17,250 homicides, equating to a national murder rate of 5.3 per 100,000 people. While relatively small, those decreases came after both violent and property crime spiked in the city in 2015. The Northeast saw the lowest crime rates of any region in the country in 2016, and CT had the fifth lowest violent crime rate in the nation in 2016. The largest increase in the state was aggravated assaults, a 15.5 percent increase, from about 26,600 to almost 31,000. Overall, total violent crimes were up 4.1 percent. Although the uptick is concerning, experts and advocates caution that the statistics are not evidence of a new nationwide crime wave. "And we must do it together", Sessions said in a statement.

Sessions said the country needed to "dismantle criminal organizations and gangs, stop the scourge of drug trafficking, and send a strong message to criminals that we will not surrender our communities to lawlessness and violence".

The FBI shows Detroit is the most violent large city in the country, again.

China is North Korea's number one trading partner, but the USA has often been hesitant to crack down on Chinese banks. The new order enables the U.S.to sanction individual companies and institutions that finance trade with North Korea .

The Brennan Center for Justice, a New York-based law and policy institute, said Monday that the murder rate increase was fueled by an uptick in killings in some of the country's largest cities - with Chicago accounting for more than a fifth of the nationwide murder increase a year ago.

The Trump administration seized on the data as proof of the legitimacy of its tough-on-crime agenda. Only 2011, when 1,582 violent crimes were reported, had a lower number. "At the same time, other cities like NY are keeping crime down". The numbers suggest the increase was driven by a spike in killings in some major cities.

John Pfaff, a Fordham University law professor and economist, says about 20 percent of the national homicide increase was just in the city of Chicago.
